Abstract

Background: Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) inner-leaf gel extract is widely used in cosmetic and dermatological preparations because of its high water content and polysaccharide composition. These characteristics make it relevant to facial-cleansing products intended to combine surface cleansing with hydration and skin conditioning.

Objective: This narrative review examines the relevance of Aloe vera inner-leaf gel extract to facial skincare, with emphasis on extraction, acemannan, processing, stability, hydration, skin comfort, cleanser compatibility, blemish-prone skin, even tone, surface smoothness, radiance and safety.

Methods: The literature concerning Aloe vera gel composition, acemannan, polysaccharide extraction, stabilisation, drying, fermentation, skin hydration, transepidermal water loss, skin pH, surfactants, cosmetic formulation, acne, pigmentation, and toxicology was reviewed. Evidence from leave-on preparations, fermented products, whole-leaf materials, beverages and multi-ingredient formulations was distinguished from evidence directly relevant to rinse-off facial cleansers.

Results: Aloe vera inner-leaf gel is a hydrophilic, polysaccharide-rich material. Acemannan contains mannose, glucose and galactose units, while processing may influence polysaccharide yield, molecular weight and acetylation. Studies of topical Aloe vera preparations have reported improvements in skin hydration and reductions in transepidermal water loss. Mild-cleansing research indicates that appropriate surfactant systems, pH and conditioning agents may support skin comfort and hydration under wash conditions. Evidence concerning acne, pigmentation and radiance provides a rationale for further investigation but does not establish treatment effects for Aloe vera cleansers.

Conclusion: Standardised Aloe vera inner-leaf gel extract is a relevant ingredient for facial-cleansing formulations. Bio Wash may combine cleansing with Aloe vera-supported hydration, conditioning, softness and post-cleansing comfort. Controlled testing of the finished formulation is required to confirm its specific performance, tolerability and cosmetic benefits.
